I used her school's colors which are red and black. The stamp set is an old Close to My Heart set that I probably bought 4 years ago when her brother graduated. It is not a current stamp set.
Pop-up Card in a Box
There are more than one size of card that you can make. This one is a little larger and does not fit into a standard A2 envelope.
Supplies:
* 12 x 12 cardstock * acetate
* patterned paper (one or two styles) * scoring tool
* adhesive * paper trimmer
* Cricut cartridges * CTMH My acrylix stamp sets
Directions:
1. Cut card stock to 8-1/2" x 12". Score on the long side at 2-3/4", 5-1/2", 8-1/4", and 11".
2. Cut off a 2" x 12" strip. Set aside and save.
3. Turn the 6-1/2" x 12" panel a quarter turn to the left. Score at 2-3/4".
4. On the long side, cut up to the score line along each of the four perpendicular score lines. You are cutting on the side with the squares (the smaller sections), not the rectangles.
5. Fold underneath on score line.
6. At the 11" score line, cut off small card stock piece to remove excess above the score line and create a tab. (See picture below where the piece is missing.)
This picture already has some patterned paper on it because I didn't take a picture earlier, but it shows where I cut off the excess.
7. Cut the 2" x 12" strip at 4-3/4" from the end with the 1" score line. Then, cut the strip in half the long way to create two strips -- each strip will be 1" x 4-3/4".
* Both strips should be scored in 1" from each end. Fold both tabs back to look like a "Z".
8. Cut patterned paper to decorate each panel as follows:
* 1 -- inside back panel - 2-1/2" x 6-1/4"
* 3 -- lower panels (outside only) - 2-1/2" x 3-1/2"
* 6 -- upper panels (sides & front, inside and outside) -- 2-1/2" square
** Center and adhere each panel as indicated. Hint: Attach the longest decorative panels to the section next to the tab. (See picture)
These pictures show the outside panels. You can use one patterned paper or more.
I attached a piece of cardstock so that I would have an area to write a note to my niece. It might be best to write the note first and then attach. Otherwise, it might be a little bumpy. This piece is cut 2" x 5-3/4".
Here are the inside panels. The directions I followed does not have a 2-1/2" x 6-1/4" panel (the long black patterned paper). Rather you only need a 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" piece of patterned paper. I just chose on this card to cover from top to bottom.
9. Fold the decorated card on the 5-1/2" score line and attach the tab inside with adhesive. This will close the box. Because of the weight of the cardstock, I prefer to use a liquid glue rather than something like Tombow on a runner. I use either CTMH's Liquid Glass or Scrapbooker's Glue with 2-Way Applicator by Scotch. These both do a good job of holding the box together.
Now, you have a closed box!
10. Apply adhesive (liquid) to the end tabs of the 1" x 4-3/4" (shaped like a "Z") and adhere to the inside of the opened box aligning them with the top of the opening. Don't seal in place as it might need to be moved a little first.
* Align the back strip so that the right tab touches the back of the box. The tab on the left side points toward the middle. Try to get the strip on straight. Adjust, if needed.
* Align the front strip so that the left tab goes toward the middle . The tab on the right should touch the front of the box. Adjust to make the strip straight before you seal in place.
Hint: Close the box flat in both directions and secure score lines to ensure it will lie flat for mailing. This may change the score line, but that's okay.
Fold the box to the left and flatten the strip.
11. Choose what you will use to decorate the inside of box: die cuts, stamped images, Cricut cuts, and other embellishments. Adhere to the strips and inside front and back of the card. Stick down lightly at first, as they may need to be repositioned. Inside elements should be placed so that they are not seen when the card is closed. It is okay, though, if a tiny bit sticks out.
Hint: Smaller die cuts or stamped images can be attached to 3-1/2" strips of clear acetate rather than attaching the item right onto the strip. I used my small laminator to make acetate strips. This also helps to place items at different levels. The acetate strips aren't seen and it even gives movement inside the card. If you look at my previous card, you will see that I attached the items right onto the strips.
12. Embellish the inside front flap, if desired.
13. Complete the project.
Here are a few pictures showing how I embellished the card. Put as many or as little things on the card as you would like. |
Note: Finished card fits in a 6" x 9" envelope. You may need to make an envelope if you don't have one this size. I made one cutting two rectangles on my Cricut using Art Philosophy and cutting one smaller. The larger one I cut tabs around each side so that I can fold them over the other rectangle to glue the rectangles together to make an envelope. Don't forget to make a flap at the top for sealing it. I used Lick & Stick, which is a remoisten able envelope glue, on the flap. It worked great and took only one stamp.
Standard A2 Card
This card is simpler and made with patterned paper. It isn't as strong, but it still looks nice. It would be a good one to make as your first card box. This was the first one I made. You could make this with either cardstock or patterned paper. It fits a standard A2 envelope. Here are the directions:
* It starts with a 4-1/4" x12" sheet of cardstock and the finished size is 4-1/4" x 5-1/2". You can get the directions on how to actually make a card similar to this here.
I hope you find these directions helpful. If you want to see more pictures and directions, check out splitcoaststampers. There are also many videos on Youtube. Here is one you might find helpful for the smaller size box.
